British people say cheers all. the. time. and it’s making me feel like an alcoholic. As an American, I’m used to saying cheers and hearing cheers only when making a toast in celebration of something. Needless to say, there is almost always alcohol involved. Since moving to England, where people say cheers if you hold the door open for them or even as an alternative to goodbye, I am constantly feeling like the most sober drunk person on the planet. I will be sitting in class and I will let someone borrow my pencil to sign the attendance sheet and suddenly I’m looking for my champagne glass so I can gulp that bad boy down and ask for another. In England, having exact change is a reason to celebrate, and I admire that. Now let’s all go out for some pints.
